Men's Nike Air Max Shoes

After Nike co-founder Phil Knight took a prototype pair for a jog, Knight was sold. And when the new technology debuted in the Nike Air Tailwind at the Honolulu Marathon in 1978, the rest of the running world soon followed.

Maximum Air

While Max Air cushioning began to take a foothold in the running world, Nike extended it to basketball in 1982 with the Air Force 1 court shoe. That proved so popular that Nike did something unheard of in the athletic-shoe industry; it re-released the shoe.

That two-pronged attack on sneaker nation inspired Nike to go even bolder, sparking the Air Revolution in 1987. That’s when the men’s Nike Air Max running shoe finally revealed to the world, by way of a small window under the heel, the cushioning that wearers had been feeling for nearly a decade.

Once again, success bred success for the Swoosh. The first Air Max runner spawned a second, then the Air Max III, the bold colorblocking of which would earn a re-release of its own as the Air Max 90.

The Air Max 97 features wavy lines on the woven upper, inspired by the concentric circles of a disturbance on a pond.

Another wave-inspired version came the following year, 1998, with the release of the Air Max Plus. The reinforcements on the upper were inspired by the waving palm trees of the beaches of Florida recalled by designer Sean McDowell.
