It began before it began

It’s no secret that Jordan burst onto the scene and forever changed the game of basketball – and sneakers. But that burst actually began a little earlier than many realize. Prior to forging his reputation on NBA courts, he made a name for himself among the league’s stars as a part of the 1984 US national team. That collection of college stars and recently drafted players who hadn’t yet started their careers with the NBA faced the pro league’s stars in an eight-game exhibition series to prepare for the international games being held later that summer in Los Angeles.

MJ’s upstarts beat the established NBA stars not once, but all eight times. That was just the start, as that team swept to a gold medal at the L.A. games.

So there was no sneaking into the professional ranks for Michael Jordan once the regular season started that October. And when he took the league by storm, the release of his first signature shoe, the Nike Air Jordan, became the hottest commodity in sportswear.

Keeping it going

Jordan shoes evolved over the years. They’ve incorporated visible Air-Sole cushioning, lace shrouds, offset ankle collars, and countless back stories about how each model reflects a bit of inspiration from the man himself.

Sales soared much like the legendary player himself. So successful was the Jordan name in the footwear game, Nike spun it off into its own standalone brand in 1997.

Available in sizes for men, women, boys, and girls, Jordan shoes have something to offer everyone. Nike/Jordan came to realize the popularity of the original releases of Air Jordan silhouettes and began re-releasing the more popular models in 1994. Girls of all ages can get in on the fun, too, with girl-approved colorways in shoes such as the Jordan Retro 1 and the Retro 3.

The Jumpman logo that marks all Jordan products isn’t restricted only to performance basketball shoes. It can be seen on training-inspired silhouettes as well as mashups such as the Jordan 6 Rings, which combines elements from the shoes that MJ wore during all six of his NBA title wins.
