Be Fearless
As 2011’s number one draft pick, KI proved he was worth the hype, earning the Rookie of the Year title. In less than a decade, he’s also earned six appearances in the All-Star lineup, and he’s won a championship, too. Clearly, this creative player isn’t like other players. Basketball shoe designer Leo Chang knew the Nike Kyrie shoes had to be different, too. The star is famously unpredictable with his fast-moving, quick-changing fancy footwork. Since his style is all about foot movement, the design takes an approach for safety, comfort, and engineering to accentuate and accommodate KI’s uncommon plays. With these shoes, basketball players can be fearless using innovative moves and have faith that their creative explosion won’t result in an injury.
How It’s Done
So what’s so unique about a Nike Kyrie shoe? Each iteration has its own focus. The Kyrie 2 introduced a rounded outsole design so when feet turned, rolled, or pivoted, the shoe would work with the player, instead of inhibiting movement. This shoe also introduced the first iteration of the thick, lightweight strap that wraps around laces to keep the foot stable. The Kyrie 3 gave its attention to traction. To increase court control, suspension pods were integrated into the outsole, while flywire cables lock the foot down. The Kyrie 5 was all about the new Air Zoom Turbo units that provide cushioning to the forefoot and extra return tech to the front of the foot, not just the heel. Designers also added a flytrap overlay for stability. Kyrie 6 features an enhanced traction pattern for total court domination. No matter the Kyrie you choose, you’ve got a super lightweight shoe designed for players who want to experiment with play and feel comfortable at the same time.
