The North Carolina Tar Heels completed their destiny, claiming the 2009 NCAA Championship by dominating the Michigan State Spartans 89-72 in front of a record crowd at Ford Field in Detroit. The title was the fifth in school history for UNC, and the school’s second under Coach Roy Williams. Tyler Hansbrough, who finished his storied career as one of the most decorated players in the history of college basketball, scored 18 points in his final game in a Tar Heel uniform. Final Four Most Outstanding Player Wayne Ellington chipped in 19 points and Ty Lawson led all scorers with 21 points while setting championship game record eight steals. All three players, along with Danny Green, returned to school this season with a goal of bringing a fifth national championship to Chapel Hill. UNC's 55 points in the first half were the most ever scored in a half in NCAA championship game history. The Tar Heels won every game in the 2009 tournament by double digits – the first school to do so since Duke in 2001. For the first time since 1982, Carolina started and finished the season as the No. 1 team in the nation. DVD extras include the full commercial-free championship game, highlights of both semifinal games and additional tournament highlights. |
