A Star Is Born
Since his early days, running the floor in the Emsley A. Laney High School gym in Wilmington, NC, it was obvious that Michael Jordan was different. He had what sports enthusiasts call the "it" quality. Averaging a triple-double and gaining All-American status during his senior year of high school was only the beginning for the future hall-of-famer.
In 1981, Jordan elected to attend the University of North Carolina, where he continued his rise to fame by leading the team to the 1982 college championship game, in which he scored the game-winning jump shot. Upon being drafted by Chicago in 1984, the then 21-year-old athlete continued to build his legacy by becoming Rookie of the Year and eventually being showcased on the cover of Sports Illustrated magazine with the headline "A Star Is Born."
As Jordan continued to lead Chicago on the winning path, it wasn't until his seventh year in the league that he finally got over the hump and became an NBA champion. He would lead his team to win the next two finals, completing the "three-peat." After a brief sabbatical from the game, Jordan returned and led Chicago to another "three-peat," ending his career with six NBA championships.
Legacy Lives On
Jordan instantly made a statement with his first signature shoe. The Air Jordan One was red and black, and it was banned by the commissioner for violating the league's uniform policy. Each time Jordan took the floor, he was fined $5,000 - however that money didn't come out of Jordan's pocket. Rather, Nike agreed to pay the fines as a way to advertise. As Jordan's legacy grew on the court, his shoes followed suit, and suddenly Jordan went from a basketball player to a brand.
From on-court performance shoes to off-court apparel, and of course, the coveted Jordan retros, his legacy lives on. The Jumpman logo featured on all Brand Jordan gear has become a globally recognized symbol.
Nearly a decade after retiring, Michael Jordan continues to be a household name. More impressive still, despite being regarded by most as "the greatest basketball player of all time," Jordan has remained grounded, maintaining that he wants to be "perceived as a guy who played his best in all facets, not just scoring; a guy who loved challenges."
This unyielding devotion to quality transferred seamlessly into the Air Jordan line. Since their debut, these kicks have been reimagined annually, so Jordan enthusiasts are treated every season to numerous on- and off-court styles. Tailored for unparalleled comfort and exceptional durability, scores of professional athletes - including Michael Crabtree, Derek Jeter, and Ray Allen - will attest to this timeless footwear's outstanding performance. Whether leaping for the last-second layup, or kicking it with your crew, J's are must-haves for those with a keen eye for sports and fashion.
Just as Michael Jordan has become a living legend both on and off the court, so has the collection that bears his name. Exploding into the spotlight in 1984, when "his airness" hit the hardwood in the first-ever pair of AJ 1's, the Jordan brand has since become a go-to for trendsetters living a sports-infused lifestyle. Now, three decades later, the iconic Jumpman logo continues to soar high as one of the most recognizable brands in the market. Step into style with Jordan Brand, and make your own history today.
